Case of Interest: Francois Givens

District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced that Francois Givens (age 61) was convicted by jury of felony corporal injury on a former cohabitant with use of a deadly weapon and felony assault with a deadly weapon.   Givens’ prior strike was also found true.

The victim and Givens dated during 2013 and 2014.  By June 2014, they separated but continued to see one another.  On June 25, 2014, the two were at Givens’ apartment.  Givens became angry and when the victim saw he had a screwdriver, she grabbed the phone to call for help.   Givens knocked the phone out of her hand and then stabbed her repeatedly with the screwdriver.  Over the course of the assault, the victim was stabbed a total of 32 times in the face, behind her ears, stomach, arms and back.   She was able to escape the apartment partially clothed and bleeding from several wounds.  Givens followed her out of the apartment.  The apartment complex manager called 911 when she heard the victim screaming for help. 

Givens also has prior convictions for felony corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant with use of a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon with great bodily injury and driving under the influence.

Givens faces a maximum potential sentence of 14 years in state prison.  Sentencing is set for May 22, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. in Department 17 before the Honorable Ernest Sawtelle.
