Case of Interest: Patrick R. Murphy

DATE: March 24, 2015

CASE: Patrick R. Murphy

PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Suzanne Salazar, Consumer & Environmental Protection Unit

District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced today that Patrick R. Murphy pled no contest to four counts of elder financial abuse and an enhancement acknowledging a pattern of fraud resulting in a loss in excess of $500,000.  The Honorable Jaime Roman sentenced Murphy to 12 years in state prison.

This case was initially submitted by the Contractor’s State Licensing Board charging Murphy with acting as an unlicensed contractor.  After a thorough investigation by District Attorney Investigator Denise Phillips, a systematic pattern of elder financial abuse was exposed.

Murphy targeted senior citizens he met from doing small construction jobs and repairs at their homes. Once these initial jobs were completed, Murphy quickly added jobs which grew in costs far exceeding the value of the work done. In several instances, payments were repeatedly made for the same work.  Murphy also borrowed money from some victims, which he failed to repay.

The investigation revealed more than 12 victims who had been preyed upon by Murphy.
