Mother Convicted of 1st-Degree Murder for Microwaving Baby

Thirty-four-year-old Ka Yang was convicted by jury of first-degree murder and assault on a child causing death.

In March 2011, Yang was alone with her 1-month-old daughter, Mirabelle Thao-Lo, for a period of 11 minutes.  During that time, evidence showed Mirabelle was microwaved for 2½ to 5 minutes.  Yang claimed she microwaved her daughter after suffering a seizure, in what is called a postictal state.

Yang faces a sentence of 26 years to life in prison.  Sentencing is set for December 18, 2015, at 9:00 a.m. in Department 21 before the Honorable Steve White.
