DA Awarded OTS Grant for Breath Alcohol Testing Devices

The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office received a $118,827 “Enhanced Forensic, Laboratory Support for Prosecution of Alcohol and Drug Impaired Driver” grant, which will fund the purchase of eight breath alcohol testing devices.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Breath alcohol instruments are used on a daily basis to test the blood alcohol content of drivers in the County of Sacramento.  At either a checkpoint or traffic stop, the driver of the car is pulled over by the local law enforcement agency and his/her alcohol content is taken by blowing into the instrument.

The District Attorney’s Laboratory of Forensic Services currently has eight breath alcohol analyzers in use by law enforcement agencies throughout Sacramento County.  To ensure these devices are working properly and providing accurate tests, the laboratory calibrates and maintains them on a routine basis.

This grant funds the cost of eight new, more technologically advanced devices.  The replacement of the older breath alcohol analyzers ensures that the laboratory continues to adhere to and maintain the highest quality analysis in response to driving under the influence of alcohol.
