The Gang Violence and Hate Crime Suppression Team—formed in 1983—is responsible for the prosecution of hardcore street gang offenders. The team targets those individuals who commit gang-related violent felonies and those who function as leaders of their criminal street gang. These cases are vertically prosecuted from initial filing to jury trial by four deputies, with the leadership of Principal Criminal Attorney Steve Harrold.

The team also prosecutes hate and bias-related criminal conduct, with an emphasis on victim participation and support. In both endeavors, the Gang Violence and Hate Crime Suppression Team works closely with local law enforcement agencies and the District Attorney's victim advocates. During monthly meetings, the team collaborates with authorities from various agencies in order to share information about gang and hate activity in our community, and to develop investigative strategies which will lead to successful prosecution of these crimes.
