Elder Abuse Vertical Prosecution Program

The specific goals that the Elder Death Interdisciplinary Review Team uses as the basis to achieve this mission are to:

prevent elder abuse fatalities;
examine deaths of elders with suspected elder abuse and/or neglect;
identify patterns that lead to fatal outcomes;
determine whether reviewed deaths may have been preventable;
develop prevention strategies;
increase awareness of physician's responsibility to consider abuse or neglect as contributing to death;
increase awareness of physician's responsibility to refer cases arising from abuse or neglect to the Coroner and other responsible agencies, including Adult Protective Services, State Licensing Department and Ombudsman;
improve system responses by identifying gaps in delivery services;
prosecute abusers; and
develop intervention strategies to reduce fatalities.
