Definition
of Stalking
Penal Code 646.9 defines a stalker as
"any person who willfully, maliciously and repeated follows or
harasses another person and who makes a credible threat with the intent
to place that person in reasonable fear for his or her safety, or the
safety of his or her immediate family." (p. 117)
Characteristics of a Stalker:
- Does not accept victim's decision that
relationship is over
- Manipulative
- Unable to cope with rejection
- Falls instantly in love
- Difficulty distinguishing between fantasy
and reality
- Dependent on others for sense of "self"
- Blames his/her situation on others
Common Behaviors of a Stalker:
- Persistent in following the victim
- Multiple violations of a restraining
order
- Taking mail from the victim's mailbox
- Showing up at the victim's home or
work
- Sending the victim letters, notes,
e-mails, and gifts that are threatening to the victim, either by themselves
or when viewed with other conduct of the perpetrator
- Vandalism
