Each year, in recognition of victims and victims’ rights, District Attorney Jan Scully presents the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Outstanding Citizen Award to victims and witnesses who have shown remarkable and outstanding courage. This award recognizes citizens who have testified and demonstrated extraordinary bravery and social conscience through their cooperation with our criminal justice system.
A very special public ceremony is held in honor of these community members who have participated in maintaining the safety of our streets and neighborhoods.

Update on Joshua: 2008 Outstanding Citizen Award Recipient
We hope you will all remember Joshua, the extraordinary young man our office honored with the the 2008 Outstanding Citizen Award. At just thirteen years old, Joshua witnessed a gang-related double homicide that took place near his home in Oak Park where violence was a regular occurrence. Despite being threatened at gunpoint to NOT cooperate with law enforcement, he helped police identify the suspects and provided crucial testimony that led to the convictions and life sentences of both murderers.
Joshua not only survived the extreme challenges of growing up surrounded by violence, he continues to thrive today. After spending the summer working as a camp counselor at the Oak Park Community Center, he enrolled as a full-time student at Sacramento City College. Having expressed an interest in the criminal justice field, one of his first courses will be an Administration of Ju stice class.
With the rising cost of higher education, Joshua is in need of financial assistance. A scholarship fund was established to help him in his academic endeavors. To ensure Joshua has the financial means to see him through the end of his college career, we ask that you consider contributing to this fund.
