Choices

The Choices Program was created in direct response to the shooting death of Gary Marcy in September 2006.  He was shot to death by a teenaged boy pointing a gun out of his bedroom window believing that the gun was unloaded when he pulled the trigger.

In an effort to prevent similar tragedies from occurring, the District Attorney’s Office, along with the Victim’s and Defendant’s families, has developed a program to educate local 5th and 6th grade students about the dangers associated with guns.  This sixty minute interactive classroom presentation is taught by a prosecuting attorney and a police officer/sheriff’s deputy who work together to educate students about the emotional and legal consequences of using a gun.  Through the use of slides, photographs and interviews, the students are exposed to the very real physical and emotional harm that can result when someone uses or misuses a firearm.  The primary goal of the program is to encourage children to consider the choices available to them in situations involving guns and prevent them from becoming another “statistic.”

To schedule a presentation at your school or for more information, contact the Choices Program coordinator: Jennifer Bubnes at 916.874.4575 or bubnesj@sacda.org.
